Groupe venu de nulle part délivrant l'un des meilleurs albums de l'année, bonsoir. Istårn, c'est son nom, endosse le beau rôle en cette fin d'année 2022, avec son deuxième album nommé Eschatology. Et il a de la gueule.

Jamais entendu parler d'Istårn ? En admettant que huit milliards d'être vivants peuplent cette planète, ce doit être le cas de sept milliards neuf-cent-quatre-vingt-dix-neuf millions neuf-cent-quatre-vingt-dix-neuf-mille neuf-cent-quatre-vingt-dix, a priori les musiciens et quelques techniciens doivent être au courant. Originaire de Bergen, la troupe a publié un EP, Downfall of the Gods, en 2011 puis un premier long format, Skyggeland, en 2013, démonstrations anonymes de black metal « de tradition » à l'âpreté typique des captations autoproduites. Les années passent durant lesquelles des titres sortent au compte-goutte et finalement le deuxième LP voit le jour, près d'une décennie après son prédécesseur. Et là, changement de dimension : du rachitisme sonore les Norvégiens passent à la superproduction, le minimalisme laisse place au foisonnement.
Un thème liminaire façon blockbuster prépare le terrain à un déferlement de guitares en trémolos et de batterie véloce tandis qu'une voix éraillée apporte la dose de noirceur réglementaire. Mais avec classe. Car la production, à la fois claire et dense, favorise le développement de thèmes variés et on ne peut plus mélodiques. Bref, du black metal tendance prog qui s'acoquine parfois avec des arrangements symphoniques. Ça peut faire peur mais la confusion et la grandiloquence sont tenues à distance, y compris sur les morceaux au long cours qui favorisent l'émotion – "The Giant" et son final piloérectile, "Dawn" et surtout "Withering World" que transcendent des chœurs à a la fois mesurés et galvanisants, une gageure. Tous les titres n'atteignent pas le même niveau d'intensité mais tous recèlent au moins une source de plaisir, que ce soit un motif malicieux qui collent aux neurones sur "Beyond the Starless Sky", les passages trépidants de "Cosmic Star" et des solos à fleur de peau – tous, avec une mention spéciale au duel guitare/ claviers sur "Visions".
Ah, les claviers ! Très présents mais pas envahissants, prépondérants mais pas pompiers, ils alternent entre majesté et chaleur vintage. Si le style pratiqué peut rappeler de prime abord une référence comme Dimmu Borgir, la délicatesse – si – de certaines mélopées, dont celle du superbe instrumental "Awakening", rapproche davantage le recueil d'Opeth et Wilderun, eux aussi alchimistes talentueux d'une certaine science de la puissance émotionnelle et dont Istårn, sur cette réalisation, propose une alternative black metal convaincante. Et ce sans besoin de forcément tirer en longueur, ce que le collectif démontre brillamment avec "Devouring Chains", petit bijou aux éclats sombres et changeants.

Une œuvre splendide tombée du ciel, lâchée par une troupe inconnue qui réussit là où tant ont échoué : on va finir par y croire, à ces histoires de multivers. Ou plutôt non : cette histoire est bien réelle, celle racontée par des fervents disciples du black metal qui transcendent leur art par la beauté des mélodies et la richesse des compositions. On a hâte d'en connaître le prochain chapitre.

A band out of nowhere delivers one of the best albums of the year, hello! Istårn, that's its name, takes on this beautiful role at the end of 2022, with its second album called Eschatology. And it's a good one.

Never heard of Istårn? Based on huit billion people on this earth, there must be seven billion nine hundred and ninety-nine million nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand nine hundred and ninety, so the musicians and a few technicians must know. Hailing from Bergen, the band released the EP Downfall of the Gods in 2011 and then a first full-length called Skyggeland in 2013, anonymous demonstrations of 'traditional' black metal with the typical harshness of self-releases. Years passed with releases in dribs and drabs and finally the second LP was released, almost a decade after its predecessor. And then, a change of dimension: from sonic stinginess, the Norwegians move on to a superproduction, minimalism gives way to abundance.
A blockbuster-like opening theme prepares the ground for an onslaught of tremolo guitars and fast drums, while a hoarse voice brings the regulatory dose of darkness. But with class. Production, both clear and dense, favours the development of varied and melodic themes. In short, black metal with a prog tendency that sometimes mixes with symphonic arrangements. It can be frightening, but confusion and grandiloquence are kept at bay, including on the long tracks that favour emotion - "The Giant" and its creepy finale, "Dawn" and especially "Withering World" that are transcended by choirs that are both measured and galvanising, a challenge. Not all tracks reach the same level of intensity but all of them contain at least one source of pleasure, whether it be a mischievous pattern that sticks to neurons "Beyond the Starless Sky", hectic passages "Cosmic Star" and skin-deep solos - all of them, with a special mention to the guitar/keyboards duel on "Visions".
Ah, those keyboards! Very present but not invasive, preponderant but not pompous, alternating between majesty and vintage warmth. And if the practiced style can remind at first sight of a reference like Dimmu Borgir, the delicacy - yes - of some melodies, including the one of the superb instrumental "Awakening", brings the collection closer to Opeth and Wilderun, also talented alchemists of a certain science of emotional power and of which Istårn, on this realisation, proposes a very convincing black metal alternative. And this without necessarily needing to be drawn out, which the band brilliantly demonstrates with "Devouring Chains", a little jewel with dark and changing shards.

A delightful album that fell from the sky, released by an unknown band that succeeds where so many have failed: we will end up believing in these stories of the multiverse. Or rather not: this story is real, the kind told by fervent disciples of black metal who transcend their art through the beauty of the melodies and the richness of the compositions. We can't wait to hear the next chapter.
